Preliminary Investigations into the Age and Growth of the Shortfin Mako, Isurus Oxyrinchus, White Shark, Carcharodon Carcharias, and Thresher Shark, Alopias Vulpinus, in the Western North Atlantic Ocean

چکیده
Preliminary analysis of the vertebrae of these three species indicate that the current processing method is adequate for counting bands. Sample collection is ongoing and it is likely that more will be obtained for the shortfin mako and thresher shark, though not for the white shark. Complete studies on the age of these species using the entire vertebral samples, tag/recapture data and length frequency analysis for verification are ongoing. Validation of band pair periodicity, which is critical for obtaining accurate ages, will be included in these studies. Information resulting from these studies will include species and sex specific growth rates, size at age, age at maturity, and longevity. The results of this preliminary analysis indicate that the vertebral centra are appropriate structures to use for aging these species. Because of the exploratory nature of these analyses and inadequate samples sizes these data should not be used to estimate growth function parameters for analytic results.

Shark fisheries in the Southeast Pacific: A 61-year analysis from Peru
Peruvian waters exhibit high conservation value for sharks. This contrasts with a lag in initiatives for their management and a lack of studies about their biology, ecology and fishery. We investigated the dynamics of Peruvian shark fishery and its legal framework identifying information gaps for recommending actions to improve management. Further, we investigated the importance of the Peruvian...
متن کاملEffects of trophic ecology and habitat use on maternal transfer of contaminants in four species of young of the year lamniform sharks.
Organic contaminant and total mercury concentrations were compared in four species of lamniform sharks over several age classes to examine bioaccumulation patterns and gain insights into trophic ecology. Contaminants found in young of the year (YOY) sharks were assumed to be derived from maternal sources and used as a proxy to investigate factors that influence maternal offloading processes. YO...
متن کاملAge and growth of the white shark, Carcharodon carcharias, in the western North Atlantic Ocean
Age and growth estimates for the white shark (Carcharodon carcharias) in the western North Atlantic Ocean (WNA) were derived from band pair counts on the vertebral centra of 81 specimens collected between 1963 and 2010.We used two previously published criteria to interpret band pairs and assessed the validity of each method using DC levels from a recent bomb radiocarbon validation study and exi...
متن کاملBig catch, little sharks: Insight into Peruvian small-scale longline fisheries
Shark take, driven by vast demand for meat and fins, is increasing. We set out to gain insights into the impact of small-scale longline fisheries in Peru. Onboard observers were used to document catch from 145 longline fishing trips (1668 fishing days) originating from Ilo, southern Peru. Fishing effort is divided into two seasons: targeting dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus; December to Februar...
متن کاملEstimating Finite Rate of Population Increase for Sharks Based on Vital Parameters
The vital parameter data for 62 stocks, covering 38 species, collected from the literature, including parameters of age, growth, and reproduction, were log-transformed and analyzed using multivariate analyses. Three groups were identified and empirical equations were developed for each to describe the relationships between the predicted finite rates of population increase (λ') and the vital par...
